The Italian Republic is one of the largest and most important nations in Europe. Its borders are mostly determined by natural obstacles in the forms of the Alps from the north. There are three different seas in other directions, such as Adriatic, Ionian, and Tyrrhenian seas. Interestingly, though the city of Rome is most populous in the country, the region of Lombardy with the regional capital city of Milan has the greatest number of population out of all other Italian regions.

Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City have formal agreements with the EU to use the euro as their official currency.
