The Italian Republic is one of the largest and most important nations in Europe. Its borders are mostly determined by natural obstacles in the forms of the Alps from the north. There are three different seas in other directions, such as Adriatic, Ionian, and Tyrrhenian seas. Interestingly, though the city of Rome is most populous in the country, the region of Lombardy with the regional capital city of Milan has the greatest number of population out of all other Italian regions. The only bigger one is Russian Federation. In terms of borders, there are 8 different neighbours, namely Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, and Crimea.
