Countries with the highest employment in industry

Top 10 countries by employment in industry

Employment in industry (percent of total employment)

The Industrial Revolution that began in the United Kingdom approximately 260 years ago meant the introduction of machines into many different areas of life. As a result, most of the work was conducted with the use of heavy machines that produced a lot of pollution. In today’s world we can notice heavily industrialized regions that live off the export of these products.

However, the last years proved that more and more regions tend to drift off from industry and focus on services instead. But still, according to World Bank Data, there are more than 20% of people, who are eligible to work, employed in this sector. Obviously, it changes depending on the region and its development stage.

Most of developing countries have little or no industry sector at all

Africa is heavily focused on agriculture. As a result, their total employment in this particular sector is extremely low. It varies from 1 to 10%. The least industrialized country is surely Burundi with 1% of the total employment in industry. Chad is second with 2% of the population employed in industry, and Somalia takes third place with 4%.

What about the most industrialized countries?

Qatar, Turkmenistan and Lesotho - these two are the top three most industrialized nations in the world according to the data from 2020. 54% of Qatar gives them first place. The second is Turkmenistan with 43% followed by Lesotho (42%).

Interestingly, there are several European nations at the top such as Chech Republic with 37% of total employment in the industry sector. Slovak Republic is fifth with 36%. Out of the top three wealthiest countries in the world, China has the biggest population that deals with industry, and it has a relatively average score of 28%.
